Fr. Maury Schepers is a Dominican Friar of the Vicarate of Eastern Africa, with connections in the Institute of Social Communication at Tangaza College, Nairobi, Kenya. His interest in Lonergan goes back to the 1970's, just after the publication of Method in Theology. Coming to East Africa in 1991 he began teaching at Tangaza College, which initially was simply a consortium for the theological training of members of missionary congregations, but more recently has developed into a nest of Institutes devoted to the promotion of various dimensions of ministry (spirituality and religious formation, social communication, youth, education, integral human development). From 1997 to 2002 he taught in the Spiritan Missionary Seminary, Arusha, Tanzania, where the curriculum in philosophy was designed, under the careful direction of Fr. Brian Cronin, cssp, to inculcate the method of Bernard Lonergan, and to challenge the students to self-discovery. Since his return to Kenya in 2002 he has continued to be involved in Lonergan studies, and this latest venture, the Lonergan Research Center in Nairobi, seems to be a normal outcome of this interest.
